Yes, that is true, but I'm not sure what effect that would have or not have. I've found the raw tape reaches a point of grimy faster than shellacked cotton faster, but then doesn't really get any worse, whereas the shellacked cotton continues to get more grimy. For me, these fairly equal results make it so I don't want the expense/effort of shellack because the delta is minimal after x amount of time. I suspect that is true regardless of climate.
