Leah: Just on the basis of him wanting to pick his own stuff, regardless of pedigree, this guy has "got it". He was perfectly happy with his old bike, but, oh no, you had to go get a Betty & introduce him to the world of cool bikes. You can't put the toothpaste back in that tube now. So he's on the loose with a credit card, an internet connection and some ideas about what he wants. There really is no "correct" way to set up a Rivendell. I have an old Atlantis catalogue that shows 8 different variations for what is meant to be a dedicated touring bike. Grant one time said words to the effect that a frame is just a place to connect together the parts you like. As to your question "has anyone done this?", my guess is "probably". Peruse the staff bikes page at Rivendell and cyclofiend's various photo pages. Besides, it is a cool looking crate, so on the off chance it's not been done, it's about time. While we love being consulted in these matters, the downside is we could talk spend weeks debating whether the hardware should be silver or black. In the meantime, he'll just buy the crate, install it & be haulin' stuff before we run out of steam.
