I've been wondering for a while if riv could do some kind of "membership" (ala REI) but actually leverage this to create a cash reserve. The problem is that most large companies "go public" to raise cash, but obviously that's not an option for riv. Even though, I'm sure there are plenty of customers who would willingly become "investors" if there was actually a channel to do so. What they're doing here is pretty darn close, except there is no time delay between "buying in" and getting your "return", if you turn right around and spend your credit immediately.
