This is a very good attitude. Now it would be stupid to give someone $10
knowing pretty certainly that he would use it for a hit, but (1) unless you
are pretty sure that he will do so, and (2) if the recipient is in obvious
need of food or shelter or clothing, I think it's worth the risk.

Of course, one "must judge" in the sense that it would be stupid not to
face facts and judge a situation or a person according to the available
data -- sentimentality is an enemy of truth, efficacy, and finally of
humanity -- but one "must not judge" in the sense that one can never really
know what goes on inside a person and what that person really needs. In
this case, helping with their obvious and outwardly apparent needs makes
all the sense in the world. And one must judge himself first.
