If you want to try a hub, find a old, older the better, Sturmey AW hub. Simple to work on, has all the gears you need, flat, uphill and downhill.
Direct drive is in the middle, so you are efficient most of the time. Oil lubricated, so it leaks like any piece of pukka British kit.
