Gernot, I have little luck keeping the rubber doughnuts in place.
The plastic tubing works well, I have aquired it from two places: 1. Like Seth mentions, cut it out of shifter cable housing (much easier to disect than spiral wound brake cable housing). 2. Ask for it at the LBS...this has worked once so far. The tubing that came out of the shifter cable housing was much thicker than the stuff I got from the LBS.
