I can so get on board with the American footwear remarks. I loathe cheap shoes, and esp athletic shoes for daily wear. Fine if you're going to the gym or for a run, but otherwise... Anyway, I'm a huge fan of good, quality leather. I've outfitted my husband (who works in business-land) in Allen Edmonds, who makes a fine USA-made wingtip oxford shoe (Grant had a pair of these in a BLUG post once), and I wear USA-made Frye boots pretty much daily. You just can't beat the character of well-loved leather shoes and boots. Yes, they are spendy, but you can get them online for great prices, and a cobbler can revitalize them for cheap when needed.
