Hydraulic discs ARE indeed a game-changer for mountain biking. Lots of
advantages to discs and really very few limitations. Locating your brakes at
the center of the wheel may be technically less efficient than a brake pad on a
rim, but it isolates your brakes away from any ground hazards and surface grime
and muck that typically affect the rims (especially in wet and icy conditions).
Also discs won't heat up your rim/tire, they're independent of the rim (so
even when your rim gets whacked somewhere out in the gnar and is way out of
true... your disc brakes should still remain true. As far as reliability I
fuss FAR less with my hydraulic discs than any of my rim brakes. They have
been super reliable for me. And disc brakes are being proven on a growing
number of touring/road bikes like the Surly Long Haul Trucker.

I like all kinds of brakes, but I love discs. You don't have to like em, and
rim brakes will likely stick around for awhile. But disc brakes have proven
their worth. I'll never give up mine.
