I'm a huge fan of discs off road. The effort/power ratio is incredible
with XT hydraulic brakes. Not really "trailside servicable," but, what are
the chances of both of them going out at once? Plus, my 29er is kind of a
purpose-built machine for singletrack, and its excellent at what it does.
I'm not advocating for discs on a riv, but if they happen, fine!

My wife has BB7's on her MTB, and they are incredibly powerful, feel fine,
and are actually super easy to work on.

FWIW, apart from the suspension fork and hydro brakes, my 29er is decently
Riv-ish.. steel frame, leather saddle, flipped albatross bars, saddlebag,
etc. :)
