I don't think we will see a Riv with disk brakes although a Bombadil with 
clearance for modern 27.5" tires and disk brakes would be totally awesome. 
On the trails, disk brakes work very well. I have a Trek Fuel EX and ride 
it on fairly tight single track trails...the brakes on it, shimano XT hydro 
disks, are totally awesome. I have 0 complaints about the braking on that 
bike, which isn't the same as my older 1996 Specialized Stumpjumper that 
used cantis. Those brakes were inadequate.
