I am 262 now and was 285 at the beginning of the year. Have always ridden 32 spoked wheels with no problems for commuting, and 24 spoked Bontrager wheels on my Specialized Roubaix with no issues.
I guess I'm a gentle rider. I just got an AHH and am riding it with the same 32 spoked wheels that have never come out of true. I haven't toured, but I commute with my laptop, books, etc. I think it all depends on how you actually ride. BTW, while my wheels have never given me any trouble, I was riding a Gunnar CrossHairs and the frame cracked on the junction of the top and seat tubes. Watwerford repaired it under warranty and didn't acknowledge any fault, but my LBS believed it was a a defect and not caused by my riding.
