Well.........I am 260 pounds now maybe 265 darn it and I ride 36 spoke rear and front wheels and have for over 14,000 miles. If you use wider tires maybe 38-40mm and are careful I'll bet you could ride on smooth roads without too much strain on the frame however an Atlantis or a Bombadil would be better. My friend has 48 spoke wheels on a old Motobecane steel frame and he weighed about 250 at the time he was riding a bunch and now probably weighs more and nothing has cracked or broken. Of course if you plan to get down to around maybe 220-240 I'd maybe get one but if not or if you are just a really big guy I'd get something sturdier.
