Hot glue has many uses and this may be one really good use of it... FWIW, Goop has the same desirable properties-- it sticks tenaciously and long term, but peals off with ease and won't damage the paint as it's being peeled off.
In my experience with hot glue, it tends to stick better to sanded or roughened surfaces. Goop seems to bind to smooth surfaces as well as it does rough surfaces.
