I tried this about 6 months ago with the Deore crankset on my Devil but the single-ring bolts I ordered were still too long. Today I ordered some 6mm bolts (mine were more than 8mm) and as soon as I get those, I'm losing a shifter, cable/housing, a front derailleur and two chainrings! I plan to keep the 36t middle ring and for now I'll run my 11-28 9-speed cassette but will eventually swap it out for either a 12-34 or an 11-36 for more range.
I love the idea of adding the 42t cog that is out there but it requires removing the 15t or 17t cog from the cassette and that creates a huge jump where I do much of my riding. I guess the 42t cog was designed specifically for true MTB riding rather than all-rounders.
