Yeah, the need to get up a few hills is what would keep me from adopting a 1x drivetrain. I really ideally like to have something a little lower than 1:1. Using Sheldon Brown's gear calculator, my current lowest gear is 21.4 gear inches (650Bx38, 175mm crank, 44/28 front 11-34 rear). It may sound a bit crazy but I would like something even lower to get up Barton Creek Blvd in Austin which is officially 13% max grade but when I had a Garmin I saw it go into the upper teens at a few places on the hill.
