You can have three of whatever kind of gears you like, if you use a little craftiness (although, with downtube shifters you will never need this trick, as downtube shifters never break). STI users really should note this down, because your cable almost certainly will break.
But let's suppose you are a STI user and your cable has broken. It will have broken up inside the shifter, and now you have a perfectly good cable from just past the shifter all the way back to the derailleur. Since you have a LHT you have water bottle cages. Take out your allen wrench and loosen up the bolts on the downtube water bottle cage. Move the derailleur with your thumb so the chain is centered on a sprocket that will give you a usable cruising gear as high on the big ring, a reasonable low gear on the middle ring and if you have a triple, a reasonable granny gear on the innermost ring, and then holding that derailleur position with tension on the shifter cable, catch the end of the cable under the water bottle cage and now cinch down the screw to hold the tension. Voila.
You'll have to wrap the cable around the water bottle cage to get it out of the way, and it's possible you may have to fiddle a little with the derailleur cable adjuster to get perfect centering.
