Ah, I got it...thanks. Funny, I felt we all kinda got snookered by
Shimano into at least trying low normal back when they were really
forcing this (it kinda felt like "Why?.. Cuz we said so"...). And
although I used them for a few years on my mountain bikes, I was
admittedly relieved when Shimano backed off, and by then I had
switched to using mostly SRAM, which had always stuck with the high
normal derailleurs.
It wasn't until I read a suggestion from Sheldon Brown on using low
normal derailleurs with bar end shifters (so that upshifts and
downshifts for both front and rear derailleurs moved in the same
direction) that I jumped back on the bandwagon. This is the more
common shifting pattern for me, and it seems to feel natural.
BUT... I do admit that I often get on a bike and have to shift in the
wrong direction to remind myself whether I'm riding low or high
normal... No big deal.
No big deal until it's a pressure situation and you try to sweep the
block and end up in your lowest gear when you meant to get to your
highest, or vice versa. Then all of a suddy it's a huge deal. Perhaps
the potential for disaster is worse going the wrong way with front
shifts -- that's my legacy of the Compe V.
