The FSA headset we use is a really, really good value--far nicer than 90 percent of the headsets available thru the '70s, '80s, '90s, and everything since. I can't recall a single problem with one--the creaker below is the first anything I've heard, and it's possible that all it needs is grease--I just don't know, it's impossible to diagnose this way. There are other nice headsets, but they cost five times as much and most, even the top names, have their own issues. It's not as though we haven't used them. I don't mean to condemn any by inuendo, but I'm not going to name any in the interest of "education," because it's not fair to them and not the way we handle things like this. But we actually have a fair amount of experience with many headsets, which doesn't mean the FSA is the best, but it does mean that we continue to have confidence in it. Headsets are relatively easy to replace, and in the old days (of generally crummier headsets), it was common to replace them every few to several years. Campy's best wore our regulary--I went through a few of those, and everybody I know who rode one did...but these days it's true that headsets are often regarded as "lifetime" components...and I think CK does have that guarantee. Any Sam build can get any headset. No swapping FSA for KING, but we'll get the KING and charge you for it (this is fair, right?), and will include the labor free. Another excellent choice is the Tange/IRD Need-L-BlastR. With balls up and needle bearings bottom, it's at least theoretically better than most. All headsets are decent, and I don't know of a truly lousy one (but don't have experience with more than a few; I just trust the companies that make them---they have good engineers, they sell in volume, and aren't in the business of making defo-parts). There are bound to be bad apples, but the overall quality is pretty good. When you order a frame from us, it'll l ikely have an FSA headset, because they've worked really well. But...if you don't trust them, we'll put in any headset you like, of course. You can send it to us or ask us to get it for you. It will cost more, but if it gives you more peace of mind, that may be worth it. Headsets are something we continue to think about, and if we go to another model, it won't be because the FSA isn't working. We've no plans to use something else, but if VP or Tange get our ear and have a good argument, we'll try out something and might change.
