If I was doing it and had the time I'd do it in two days taking the basic route that Eric mentioned. You could take a direct route from Sac~SF but it wouldn't be a very nice ride in my opinion. If you head through Napa and Marin you're riding through some incredibly beautiful areas. It could be done in a day but I like to have time to stop and explore, take pictures, ect. so I'd plan on camping along the way. have fun!
