I'd buy the White or Phil . . .they are as good as it gets. These
are on the high end though. Then you have the cheap Shimano mtb hubs.
There is not much in between.

I won't use cup/cone hubs anymore. My last pair was 105's from the
90's and the bearing races were shot in less than one year.
Rebuild? ...oops ..... you can't replace the races. I vowed never
again to use Shimano throwaway hubs again. Vintage Campy SR hubs were
fine.... they're not even sealed and they seem to last forever.

I would -consider- Shimano hubs if they used cartridge bearings ....
but they don't. If I'm going to spend all good $$ on having wheels
built . . . the hub is the heart of that wheel..... and should
rendered useless if one part fails. All the parts should be
replaceable, in my preference. I know lots of people use Shimano hubs
and never have a problem so far. I could save hundreds if I did use
them . . . . but it isn't always about the $$.

I'm in need of new set of wheels and was about to get some White
hubbed wheels . . . but I just can't seem to buy them. I prefer the
hub to be separate from the FW, and I don't need more than 7 cogs.
I've used FW's my entire life. . . and with a Phil hub I have no
mechanical concerns. I have a stock of Sachs/Sram13-32 FW's . . . as
well as IRD and Sunrace making useful gear combos in FW's. As much as
I like the idea of making custom cassette combos..... the reality is
once you find one combo that works . . . there's not much to change.
Maybe I'll go the rest of my life using FW's. LOL!
