Hey Paul. IMHO the practical differences between quill and threadless are pretty minimal as long as the steerer isn't cut too short on a threadless bike. The reason to go with 1" threadless is so that the frame can be the same. 1" is the normal quill fork diameter and it is easy to get a shim that allows any threadless stem to work on a 1" fork...
