I've used whatever I happen to have on but if I'm planning on a longer
ride I will wear a pair of Simples. They are similar to vans but the
sole is one long piece of recycled car tire. They end up being fairly
stiff and I like that.

I've never rode in clipless and only very briefly with toe clips, so
my experience may not matter much.
