I noticed some unusual rattling from my rear Honjo fender today, and a close inspection revealed a crack at the seat stay bridge attachment. This one threads directly into the bridge. The fender is about a year old, and has between 3 & 4,000 miles on it. I put a small rubber washer between the fender and the stay and a metal washer on the inside.
I had another rear Honjo fender break on me with just about the same amount of milage. That one was on a different bike, and broke at the rear fender stay. I attributed that break to having installed it with a single bolt at the rear fender. This one went on with two bolts and remains quite tight at both the chain stay and fender stay. I live a couple of niles down a dirt road and this fender probably spent close to a third of its life on dirt roads. And the general condition of paved roads here in northern Vt is abysmal. There are a few sections on my daily commute that regularly rattle parts off the bike if they are not attached tightly. But the incident leaves me wondering if these Al. fenders - which I love for their good looks, their light weight, full coverage, and firm stay in place manners - are tough enough for the task. I don't expect a fender to last forever but longer than this. What have others experienced? Should I switch to steel, or revery to plastic and a big mud flap?
