It's all about "perceived value" The casual bicycle consumer (as well as many other types) have been conned into the idea that "wheel systems" are something special. Consumers see low-spoke count wheels as something that "looks high tech" and are led to believe by pushy sale-people and marketing materials that this is somehow better.
