I've owned an older Trek steel tandem since the mid-90's. I've ridden
it with ALL kinds of people. Took on a week long organized tour one
year and rode with a different person each day. Finding a good partner
for riding tandem is a lot like finding a partner in general. I had a
good friend ride with me one time (and the best tandem stoker I've
ever ridden with) who likened it to finding a good dancing partner.
Some people make wonderful companions, others can make for a miserable
experience. Many a cyclist dreams of the "equalizing" merits of the
machine. But, I've also heard them referred to as "divorce makers"

I too dream of being able to share the riding enjoyment with someone
on a tandem, they can be fun. Kiddie cranks live now on the ol' Trek
with a pair of Dove bars on the back, Albatross on the front. My 9
year old seems to love to ride, perhaps some day when she gets older,
we could take that cross-country tour I've always dreamt of? I know
it won't be with my wife, she HATES riding tandem... She'd MUCH rather
ride her single bike.

It'd be great to have something with the design principles of
Rivendell: tire clearance, versatile, comfortable geometry, stable,
etc... Co-Motion makes a fine machine, but they seem really race-
oriented. Even their Periscope models seem to have tight clearances
and inadequate clearance for fenders and wide tires. My brother
bought one a couple of years ago and converted it over to 650B wheels
which solved the clearance issue. Handling wasn't quite right for him
and I am anxious to hear how his having a custom replacement fork made
might solve the handling?

Eric, Congratulations in exposing someone else to a century ride. Any
perspective on the experience from your stoker?
