You can remove the spring and the grey plastic washer thing-a-bob.  Doing
this and having the adjuster screwed all the way out allowed me to get an
inflated 35mm (actual) tire through the pads my screwing the adjuster back
in all the way.  I can't speak for the new "big mouth" tektros, but I have a
pair of Nashbar branded Tektros that are really crappy no matter what pad I
tried compared the the Shimano's that came on my Ram.  The Tektro-Cane Creek
levers with the additonal quick release are really nice, but they are a lot
beefier than the Shimanos, you may or may not like that.
