I've used a v-brake lever (such as the love lever) with a regular cantilever on my around town bike, which is a fixed gear, so the demands on the brake aren't as great. That being said, it never failed me when I needed it, although it did require quite a firm grip to get maximum braking power. I probably wouldn't recommend this set- up if the bike is to be ridden in terrain with extended downhills or for loaded touring.
