The "linear" brakes you refer to are actually "linear pull brakes,"
which is just the technical name for v-brakes.  One of the main
differences between v-brakes and normal center-pull cantilever brakes
is that in order to produce equivalent force, the cable is pulled
farther in v-brakes than it is in cantilever brakes.  That means that
brake levers designed to work with v-brakes have a different pivot
geometry that allows them to pull more cable over their action than
those designed for cantilever brakes.  Thus, it is important that to
make sure that the cable pull of your levers match those of your
brakes.

Coincidentally, brake levers that have appropriate cable pull for
center-pull cantilever brakes also have appropriate pull for all road
caliper brakes.

In terms of brake levers, are you using drop bars or upright bars?
