yes, for instance some test SA rules I created that match for any  
character, or the letter "e"...

All true...and FWIW I posted both to the SA list, and to qmailrocks,  
and unfortunately got no bites. I figured there were enough people  
around here with enough experience running this type of setup that  
someone might have some ideas.
