Sorry, I read this too quickly. I did set a value for -m but not -- 
max-conn-per-child. I will try that.

I notice there are also options for --timeout-tcp and --timeout- 
child. For now I will stay with defaults.

Honestly, when I configured the run files, I did not think that any  
of this would be necessary as we have run a qmailrocks-style server  
for 4 years (up until December 2008) on really crappy hardware  
without any issues.
