Hello,

I am using qmail-scanner v1.25 with qmail-1.03 and the v2316
SPAMCONTROL patch on FreeBSD 5.4. I have SpamAssassin 3.04 and clamav
0.87 configured in qmail-scanner-queue.pl. I actually have 2 machines
with this configuration set up as smart hosts for an exchange server.
These smart hosts are very capable - dual 3.06GHz Xeon servers with
1GB ram apiece.

What is happening is that on large (typically 7-20MB, we have a 20MB
attachment size limit) attachments the clam virus scan (I am using
clamdscan) is taking so long that the sender times out and resends
the mail. The sending server that we have had the most trouble with
is a sendmail server with a 3 minute timeout between when they finish
sending the data and when they expect us to say 'OK'. This would
normally only be a minor annoyance, except that the mails are still
being delivered by qmail. This results in repeated delivery of large
mails to my users, who tend to get upset when they receive the same
thing over and over. In one case already I have had to install a
separate instance of qmail-scanner configured without clamav in order
to keep this from being a daily headache.

I am wondering why we continue delivery after the sender has dropped
the connection. It seems like we should not deliver the message,
since the connection was dropped before we had time to say we
received the message. Is this something that qmail-scanner should be
involved in? I am not sure where I should be looking to fix this.

For what it's worth, the administrator of the sendmail server
mentioned earlier says he is able to configure his scanning solution
to ignore messages larger than a particular size. With qmail-scanner
and clamav I don't think I am able to do this for anything besides
archive files. Am I missing something here?
