closing out this thread:

the long scan times i was experiencing are resolved. i was testing this new server from home, where i have an excellent, low-latency wireless broadband connection; nevertheless, after putting the new server in my colo cabinet, the scan times dropped from being 15 seconds, 300 seconds, 7 seconds, etc, to .29 seconds, 2.7 seconds, .05 seconds, etc., a tiny fraction of what i was seeing, and definitely what i was hoping for in building out the new server.

so, all's well that ends well, i suppose.
