Looks like most of the scanning time takes place when removing file. *OR* the date/time is not getting updated until the last line is written so it misleads you to think that a large time jump happens at the end. This is what I bet it is...
i wish that were the case. the message i scanned was little more than the word 'test'. the reason it seems pretty clearly anomalous is that the same message on one of my existing servers - a netra t1 440mhz - would take maybe two seconds. the new box is a dual pentium III/1ghz. i would generally expect that to run about at least one order of magnitude faster.
