I don't really have much idea what effect HWSURFACE would have, if any. It will certainly depend a lot on your hardware and drivers. My suggestion would be not to bother with it unless you're having performance issues, and then try it to see if it makes any difference. Note that it's conceivable that HWSURFACE could actually make things slower in some situations, e.g. if it results in more movement of data between main memory and video memory.
