There are several solutions you can use to audit your system. You can log all events to a central server which might not be sufficent because root can stop reporting or you can use things like PowerBroker to restrikt and audit access to root or other accounts ( http://www.beyondtrust.com/PowerBroker-Servers-Unix.aspx?section=PowerBroker-Servers-Unix). I'm still searching for something comparable based on an open source solution but didn't find something yet.
