You can get USB cables with any kind of connector on either end (Male, 
female, small square), extension cables, etc. Try www.Cyberguys.com, Jameco, 
or Digikey.

Because it won't fit.  :)    A standard USB printer cable has a square end
and at the other end a rectangular plug that would go into a computer.

The external drives I have seen have the _smaller_ rectangular jack, the
size that is used on many cell phones.    So I'd need a cable with the
smaller rectangular connector and the square connector - and that is what I
have not seen.

It is also possible that my router won't support what I'm trying to do...

You just use a regular USB printer cable.   It's called a USB device cable.
