It's pretty shocking what's happening all the way around these days. Even more shocking is how nonchalantly most people are reacting to it. The sheer speed and volume of radical actions by the government right now are such that most people really don't even know a fraction of what's going on---it's "information overload." Worse, they think it's normal, and things won't really change as much as some of us are warning. This weekend I was describing what happened in just the last two weeks to a friend who is not exactly living in a cave and his jaw dropped as I laid it all out. + Congress retroactively taxing specific individuals who obtained their income not just legally but with the blessing of the very same Congress now taxing them at 90%; + Congress passing legislation to create a "mandatory volunteer" organization that has elements that are shockingly similar to what despotic governments have done in the past with the same euphemistic flair for the Orwellian; + The Fed pumping $1.2 trillion of monopoly money into the banking system; + The $700 billion bailout + $400 Billion omnibus budget + $2 trillion toxic asset "plan" + Next year's $4 trillion budget (complete with $1.75 trillion deficit) + The executive branch going for complete control of the salaries of employees of all companies that in some way receive federal funds; + The President firing the CEO of one company (over any input from its board members or even Congress) and telling another company which foreign company it should partner with; + President insults the Queen of England with an iPod full of his campaign speeches; + President bows -- literally -- to the King of Saudi Arabia, and gets rave reviews from a Russian autocrat who calls him his "new Comrade", and goes to Turkey to start direct talks with Syrian dictator Assad for the first time...
