I'm thinking that the moving from one drive mapping on one machine (F: on desktop) to another machine (C: on laptop) confuzzled VFP. Rick's trick solved it very quickly. I tried all sorts of recompiles, started with a new project (PJX), checked the code pages of the files. I hope this helps someone out to save some time and frustration in the future.
