I also use Cable as our primary ISP for office and personal (I only deduct
80% of cable for taxes <g>), and DSL as both a backup, and as the primary
connection for my ftp Server (backed up by Cable). In the past few years
Cable has only gone down a handful of times, and not always with a local
power outage. DSL is supposed to be more stable, and is unaffected by local
power outages (we have an auto-start natural gas fueled generator and UPS
units all over the place). But in the past 5 weeks the DSL has gone down 6
times. Turns out a squirrel built a nest in the local telco box, and every
once in a while all phone lines in our area had problems. Now that the nest
is gone we will see how reliable DSL becomes, again. It had been up 100% up
for about 2 years.

For me the tax deductible (100% on DSL) cost of the DSL is cheap insurance.
I use automatic failover firewalls, which helps with the reliability factor.
But one never knows when something will come out of left field and whack
us - especially when we begin to feel cocky and over-confident <g>...
