Hi folks,

I'm aware of recent threads concerning machine recommendations. I'm looking
for something a bit different, though, so this should be a sufficiently
fresh topic. Anyway, since everything changes every 5 minutes in this biz,
no such thread can remain relevant for long. :-)

I want to build as flexible a desktop machine as possible. (Laptops are a
necessary evil; I don't like them at all for everyday use.)

My plans for it are vague. I want to be able to dual-boot some variety of
Linux and some Windows OS, and be able to run VMs from either OS. I don't
plan to use the machine as a server, but for development as well as gaming
and multimedia purposes. For this I assume I need massive quantities of
memory as well as a very fast processor--but perhaps not one that is
"tweaked" for particular OSes or applications. Not sure about the
value/usefulness of multiple processors for my purposes, but would like to
be educated. I prefer AMD to Intel.

This machine should have a high quality sound card that works with popular
Linux flavors as well as Windows OSes. Ditto for high quality video. It
needs to have the ability to handle both SATA and IDE drives, with plenty
of room and controller capacity for multiple drives. I don't want RAID,
just lots of storage.

It needs a NIC that won't fight with Linux or Windows.

I want robust components that are NOT built with the assumption that I will
throw them away after 2 or three years. I typically keep a desktop machine
for 8 to 10 years, and I want all of the parts, including the power supply
and hard drives, to work for that period of time. I KNOW such parts exist;
the prices do not scare me. At the same time, the motherboard should be as
upgradeable as possible so I can add more RAM or a faster processor as needed.

Along with this I need a recommendation for a color inkjet
printer--preferably NOT HP--that will work with Linux or Windows. And,
recommendations for the best free/open source VM software for both Linux
and Windows.

I'm not asking for a recommendation for "Dell Model so-and-so" or "Asus
such-and-such". I'm going to have my local whitebox builder build what I
want. So I'm looking for recommendations for cases, power supplies,
motherboards, memory cards, HDDs, sound cards, and video cards that will
work together to provide the experience I want.

This should be interesting. ;-)

Please, let fly!
