        Again, it depends on the drug. Marijuana has much less immediate  
medical effect than alcohol, and it takes many years of chronic use  
to do permanent damage. There have also been no recorded cases of  
death by overdose of marijuana, while every year hundreds of deaths  
from alcohol poisoning occur.

        The laws about drug use are based on many criteria, but medical  
safety is hardly the main reason.
