Within the last few weeks the client has been complaining that sometimes

Well, something's changed. What has changed on the client's network, new
hardware, new software updates, new cabling? Has the software for the label
printer been updated?
The only change that I am aware of from around when the problem started
is that we re-indexed the database.
They have recently swapped out a PC with a dead hard drive, but I
believe that was done after this problem started up.
Have you turned everything off and back on again? Annoyingly, a lot of
problems with pending updates, deleted files hanging around because there's
still open file handles, etc., and other symptoms are 'solved' with a
reboot. Cheapest solution known.
Yes, I started with them unplugging the printer from the USB port and
plugging it back in. That seems to stop it temporarily, but again,
because we cannot find a reproducible scenario we can't test it properly.
Are these print jobs going directly to the printer, or are they going
through a print server? I've found that workstations used as print servers
can have problems with updated virus checkers, queue files not getting
deleted and bloating directories, disk space problems, defrag problems,
etc. If this is your configuration, switch the printer to a new workstation
and see if the problems continue.
Or do each of the workstations have their own printer? Your original
message didn't specify.
Printers are directly connected to each PC and each PC only sends the
jobs to its own printer.
Has the volume of orders or the complexity of the reports changed?
Sometimes, a small increment in the volume is enough to hit a tipping point
where new bottlenecks appear.
No, no change in volume or complexity (it's just a label displaying the
owner's name, address and details of the items).
They then have to manually print it and when they do it manually it works.
This apparently is occurring on any of their 11 workstations. When I check
the print queues of all the printers on the PC, none have any documents
pending so it looks like the print job has disappeared. Another site with
6 workstations has not complained about the problem and both sites are
running the same version of my application.
Again, unless you've made a recent change to this site, the problem isn't
likely in your code, but in their configurations. (Not to shift the blame,
just narrow down the problem.) They key is to find a reproducible
situation, as it's much more difficult to troubleshoot a once-in-a-while
gremlin...
Yes, that is my problem. I've been trying to narrow it down for the
last 6 weeks or so but have not got any reproducible situation. :(
Sometimes they complain that it's happening "many times" a day, yet when
I tell them to call me when it occurs they might call me once for the day.
