Good for you.

Personally I believe the CIO position will eventually be eliminated and here
is why.

All of the MIS depts. I have worked alongside see themselves as the keepers
of the key to their kingdom.

NONE of them understand the entire business process.

For instance, the last good gig I had was at Alliance gaming in vegas.

Even today I can show you the process flow:

Development containing Art and Math (art did the artwork for the slot
machines and math developed the formulas)
Engineering containing Mechanical, Electrical, and Software
Quality Assurance and Compliance
Manufacturing

Each of those has unique requirements that were NOT being met.

Now that I am older and wiser, I would do it this way.

Rather than have a central MIS, or IT dept.

I would have one or more people working in each of those departments getting
their job specifications from the department manager, and their big picture
specs from the CIO.
This way they knew all of the problems in their respective departments.
That way we could work together to make sure the process was seamless

Our current way of doing IT does not allow for that.

Attempting to get the CIO position and a Masters is demanded. Working on it
is acceptable here.
