I am not convinced that supplying electricity to the area was that important
compared to giving up control to a bureaucracy. They took over huge amounts
of land, run local governments, deface the landscape, etc.

I will try to find the blistering article I read a year or so ago describing
what the TVA has become. I think I misread the cost structure. The better
answer was that the TVA is so heavily subsidized by the Feds in order to
deliver cheap electricity that its cost to the taxpayer is 5 to 10 times
higher than that same amount of electricity bought through regular channels.
The cost is buried so deeply in the Fed budget for TVA that no one can
figure it out exactly.

Now the TVA is talking about partnering with Obama to build a wind farm and
transmission towers. Cost is unknown. This is what I meant about government
projects taking on a life of their own. They just keep getting bigger and
infiltrating all levels of society.

I think I read something about the politics in San Diego which has caused
high taxes and other costs of living increases.
At least with corporations they are spending their own money. Governments
spend yours.
