I also have minimal use of my mobile phone - mainly when out of town. I use Verizon and 4 or so year old LG. I pay a buck for any day I use it plus a per minute charge 4, 5, 10 cents - do not really know. I buy $100 worth of time every year which keeps my unused time intact. I forgot to renew last month - they did send a bunch of text messages, but the phone usually resides in a drawer and I missed them. Anyway, I gave them my 100 and they restored my unused 18 hours now I have 28.

The phone ain't free, because there's no inflated contract to pay for it. After that, however, it's great. Each December I buy a '200 minute, 12-month' package for $99.95, which usually carries at least a double-point bonus. Thus, after four years, I have about 1600 minutes in my account. You never lose either minutes or days when you renew/extend. In all fairness, I use my phone very little. It's main purpose is as an emergency phone that is always in my car. If I have a long doctor's visit I take it in with me so I can call my wife if our schedule needs to change. Otherwise, it sits in the door pocket. The point is, I'm paying $8.33/month, period, for all the service I need and then some. My first phone, a Motorola, cost $79.95. It got kind of scratchy last year so I got a new one - a Samsung, for $32.95, with camera and everything. Works great. In my experience, coverage is just as good as anyone else's. I'm a fan!
