I don't know which drives work, and which drives don't work. The drive in my G5 PowerMac7,3 happens to work, but it is an old hard disk from around 2010 (still newer than Apple's original disk). My drive probably supports SATA II (3Gb/s), but pciide is SATA I (1.5Gb/s). I share my dmesg with wd0 at pciide0.
