It looks like r128 broke on macppc during 5.2-beta or maybe a bit earlier. My B&W G3 had the same problem, and I had played with whatever option r128 had, to no avail. OpenBSD 5.1 (or was it 5.0?) worked fine, from what I can remember. I didn't report it to the list, because my G3 has another big problem [1] and the machine is not in very good shape.
