I ssh to a vm and read locally with mutt (local delivery, mbox format), and if I want to see the pretty pictures, I bounce it (a mutt action) to a separate IMAP account on the same vm (virtual delivery), and Thunderbird on my laptop connects to that account. That seemed to me to be the easiest way to view the occasional email in Thunderbird. Having said that, I think that dovecot can be configured to handle mail in home directories, but I haven't done that. The separate IMAP account sits alongside others in a dedicated dovecot directory. There's a commented out line in /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-mail.conf that looks hopeful: mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u That parameter also accepts "maildir:" as a prefix instead of "mbox:". Anyway, just an idea to consider. cheers, raf
