OK, but the I something you should be doing already, IMO. What is the point of having a FQDN if you are not using it? And you are already editing /etc/hosts (incorrectly), so you're already doing something on every system. It seems like what you want is "This should work how I want and I should not have to do nothing at all to make it work"?
