neither does this. this only disables unauthenticated relaying, but

I fear I don't understand this. We *want* to disable unauthenticated
relaying, otherwise we're an open relay, and we *want* to allow
incoming mail from unauthenticated clients, otherwise our users
wouldn't be able to receive any mail - aside from other users of my
mail system (who authenticate). So unless we're paraphrasing each
other, this is, effectively, *forcing* authentication to *relay*
(outbound) mail while still accepting unauthenticated mail as final
delivery (inbound).
This is what confused me, multiple times. You say you are
"forcing authentication to relay".
The "forcing authentication" is something different than
"requiring authentication to relay",
they are two different things and you seem to mix them into one.
it would be better not to mix them.
"forcing authentication" is the case where you disable mail from client
without authentication.
"requiring authentication for relaying" is where you only relay
authenticated clients.
